How come characters can have boyfriends/girlfriend

to me SEGA is just butt backwards at this point, they can't seem to make any kind of sense, Sonic could have been something so much more, I won't even blame most of the fans because it was SEGA's job to keep this series of high standings, but instead SOJ wants to be a tyrant  and control everything. mean while the purest eat all this crap up = =
